Short answer
Assess a BESS as a system at a specific location. Gather the system manufacturer’s documentation and operating context. A portable extinguisher should not be treated as a complete fire protection design for an energy storage installation.
Define the project boundaries
Is this a new installation, an expansion or an existing system? Which components will remain and which will change? Identify the documentation owner and who can agree modifications. This prevents comparison of offers that cover different scopes.
Documents to gather
Our preparation checklist includes:
- Manufacturer, model and configuration version.
- Battery, module, cabinet and installation arrangement information.
- Operating instructions and existing protection measures.
- Test reports cited by the supplier, including their scope.
- Site layout and access for operators and responders.
- Modification history and current servicing responsibilities.
Do not submit confidential drawings through a general enquiry form. Start with a scope description and agree the document transfer arrangements separately.
What does UL 9540A establish?
UL Solutions describes UL 9540A as a method for evaluating thermal runaway propagation in battery energy storage systems. A report needs to be read with its tested configuration and conditions. A reference to this method is not an effectiveness certificate for every extinguishing agent or automatic confirmation of Polish installation compliance.
Separate equipment from installation design
Ask each supplier to identify the problem their proposal addresses and what it excludes. A joint discussion involving the site owner, BESS supplier and fire protection specialist can establish the scope of further assessment. Do not select a product capacity using an unverified kWh-to-litres conversion.
Starting a discussion with Envoy EX
Tell us the site type, project stage and intended consultation scope. We can then identify the information needed for a discussion about equipment. This is a needs-assessment step, not a declaration that one product protects the entire BESS.
